Spekes’s hingeback tortoise

The Speke’s hingeback tortoise (Kinixys spekii) is a unique species of tortoise native to East and Southern Africa, known for its distinctive physical adaptation: a functional hinge at the rear of its carapace. This hinge allows the tortoise to fold down the back part of its shell to protect its hind legs and tail from predators, a highly evolved defense mechanism.
